2 homes in 2 months: now we're finally settled

So this blog post is just a little insight to the apartments we’ve been in since arriving in Tokyo. As most estate agents in Japan will not rent to you until you have all your residency cards and other documents (which you only get once you’re in the country of course), Sam and I had to initially rent with a letting agency set up specifically for foreigners. Usually this letting agency is used to people on student or working holiday visas, so their prices are high, but the apartments come furnished and the move in fees aren’t as steep as other places and, best of all, their minimum contract period is only 2 months, so that means, with a notice period of 1 month, you can give your notice after 1 month, to move out 1 month later (of course adding up to the 2 month stay minimum). Sorry if that sounds complicated, I hope it made a bit of sense though.

Sam and I never thought we’d find a new place quickly, but as luck had it, we managed to find a perfect apartment, in just as good of a location as the first place (maybe even, dare I say, a better location?!) and it also is much bigger, cheaper and better suited for our lifestyle. There was a lot to do with regards to moving. Organising cancellation and setup of bills in the old and new apartment along with finding furniture, moving all our stuff on our own and finding a letting agency that would rent to two foreigners, was certainly a challenge. However, after spending half of May and half of June working hard, we finally got everything sorted!

As of 13th June 2022, we are now in our new, more permanent home in Tokyo. We live in Higashi-Ikebukuro (although it’s closer to Otsuka than Ikebukuro to be fair, which we are more than happy with as Otsuka is one of our favourite places in Tokyo so far, with Harajuku coming a close second). I can’t believe in one week we turned this empty apartment into a home. All our furniture is built, everything has been put away and we’ve almost finished all the little touches too. We have a small back garden, which we’re hoping to work on and make pretty over the summer. We have some nice space by our front door too, which we’re using as a place to store things we want to throw away at the moment, but we will be looking to get some fake grass and a coupe of chairs and a table our there within the month. Finally we also have some hand painted scrolls that we have just put up in our living space, and a corkboard above the TV with maps of the Tokyo metro and railway systems, as well as a colour in map of all the prefecture of japan, which we want to highlight/colour as we visit each place!

It’s really starting to take shape, we hope you think so too, I’ll drop some pictures below of our old place first, and then our new place afterwards. Can’t wait to hear what you guys think of them.
