Kyushu Travels: Parts 3/8, Itoshima

Our third place to explore this holiday was Itoshima in Fukuoka prefecture. With our dear friend Tomoko, we rented a car and went to a small pottery studio bright and early to make some plates together. A unique and fun souvenir from the area for us to treasure for a long time. The experience was our first making any kind of pottery, and we love Japanese style pots and plates so much, so it was really exciting to learn this skill with a close friend.

Next, we went to the beach, visited the Tori gate in the ocean with the couples rocks, before going to a famous Itoshima restaurant for lunch. Afterwards, we went into the mountains to see a waterfall surrounded by the beautiful forests changing colours for the autumn season. The views were so breathtaking they moved me to tears. I’m sure this strong feeling will remain in my heart for months to come.

After the waterfall, we went souvenir shopping and then to a beautiful local cafe that had a popup makers market with handmade accessories and things. At this cafe I managed to have a hot chocolate and a chocolate muffin, something that is nearly impossible in Japan given my soy and milk allergy. I am so grateful to this place for giving me such a great experience. Lastly, we walked to a small shrine and headed to Fukuoka that evening to have a nice meal in a restaurant we’ve been looking for to for months!
